Self-care, wellness, and beauty have been all the rave recently. Gone are the days when indulging in a facial or a hot yoga class was reserved for the elite — now it’s a practice embraced by people from all walks of life. This change couldn’t have come at a better time. People have started prioritising all aspects of their health and wellbeing. The events of the past few years have helped us realise the importance of a work-life balance, making time for physical activity, nurturing our mental health, and, perhaps most importantly, pampering ourselves.

According to Google Trends the number of searches for “self-care” has profoundly increased in South Africa over the last 5 years!

But what exactly is self-care and why is it important?

Self-care (as in the term) is about taking care of yourself, in every way — emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually. It is the routine of checking in with yourself. Asking if you are healthy in all aspects of your life. Is there balance and harmony? Do you nurture, respect, and love yourself?

Here are some of our easiest self-care tips to get you on track to a fulfilling life:

● Get enough rest – aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep at night

● Go outside – being in nature is both calming and energising. Nature walks, and walking barefoot outside (known as grounding walks) have profound benefits for mental and physical health

● Rest your mind – meditate, read, or get a massage

● Know that it’s okay to say No

● Nourish yourself – drink enough water

● Be physically active – your body will thank you for even just 10 minutes of movement

● Make time for yourself – you deserve it
